Inside the Triad’s Aviation Growth

For more than a century, North Carolina has played a role in aviation history. Today, the next chapter isn’t unfolding on the coast. It’s happening in the Piedmont Triad.

With billions of dollars in investment, groundbreaking aircraft programs, and thousands of new jobs on the horizon, Greensboro and the surrounding region have become one of the fastest-growing aviation and aerospace hubs in the country. Companies are choosing the Triad for its location, infrastructure, and access to talent, creating opportunities that extend far beyond the airport itself.

But as production ramps up and new facilities come online, one challenge is becoming increasingly clear: finding the skilled workforce needed to support this growth.

A Region Built for Aviation Growth

The Piedmont Triad has quietly assembled one of the strongest aviation ecosystems in the Southeast. From aircraft manufacturing and maintenance to engineering, logistics, and advanced production, nearly every part of the aviation supply chain is represented.

Some of the industry’s biggest names are helping shape what’s next.

JetZero recently selected Greensboro for its new advanced manufacturing campus, bringing a multibillion-dollar investment and an estimated 14,500 new jobs to Guilford County. The company plans to manufacture its blended-wing-body commercial aircraft, a design expected to significantly improve fuel efficiency while redefining the future of commercial aviation.

Just down the runway, Boom Supersonic is preparing to manufacture Overture, the world’s first independently developed supersonic passenger aircraft. Its Greensboro Superfactory represents another major investment in the region and positions the Triad at the forefront of next-generation aerospace manufacturing.

Meanwhile, AAR Corp. continues to strengthen Greensboro’s reputation as a premier Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) destination, providing aircraft maintenance and engineering services for commercial and cargo fleets around the world.

Honda Aircraft Company also continues to expand its presence after nearly two decades in the region, designing and manufacturing HondaJets from its global headquarters at Piedmont Triad International Airport.

Together, these organizations are transforming the Triad into one of the country’s most important aviation manufacturing corridors.

The Real Competitive Advantage Is Talent

Facilities, equipment, and technology can all be built. A skilled workforce takes years to develop.

That’s one reason aviation companies continue investing in the Triad. The region has made workforce development a priority through partnerships between industry, education, and local leadership.

Guilford Technical Community College has become a cornerstone of that strategy, offering FAA-certified aviation maintenance and manufacturing programs that prepare students for careers in aircraft assembly, avionics, structures, and maintenance. The college is also developing customized training programs to support JetZero’s workforce as hiring accelerates.

Programs like the Andrews High School Aviation Academy are helping introduce students to aviation careers even earlier, creating a pipeline that supports long-term industry growth.

These investments are helping position the Triad to meet growing demand, but competition for experienced aviation professionals will continue to intensify as more employers expand their operations.

Growth Creates Opportunity Across the Region

The aviation boom isn’t limited to aircraft manufacturers.

Every new production line creates demand for skilled trades professionals, engineers, supply chain specialists, logistics teams, quality professionals, administrative support, and corporate talent. It also fuels growth for suppliers, construction firms, distribution operations, hospitality businesses, and countless local service providers.

As more companies establish operations in the region, hiring quickly and building reliable talent pipelines will become a key competitive advantage.

Organizations that invest in proactive workforce planning today will be better positioned to meet production goals tomorrow.
